1880's Victorian Brown Plaid Silk and Velvet Bustle Dress with Ruched Trim
An 1880's later Victorian bustle dress, in very good condition. The lining looks to be tan cotton, the outer fabrics are tobacco brown silk taffeta and velvet. The bodice is decorated with dark brown silk grosgrain ribbon bows.
It looks like the dress wasn't stored properly, so there is some splitting to the silk at the hem, sleeves, and upper back of the skirt. It is possible that the silk is weighted, given its age. The sleeve puffs look like a possibly later addition or alteration, the dress shows a number of other fit alterations.
The dress is in two pieces, the bustle draping is mounted to the skirt waistband. The bodice is front buttoning. The buttons are fabric covered, and some of them are worn/the covers missing on a few. The skirt has an under skirt layer, essentially a built in petticoat to support the draping.
The dress fits a modern size 2, but is best used for reference/study. It is photographed with a lobster tail bustle
